Jaw (TMJ) and Pelvic Floor Connection

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the pelvic floor are not directly related anatomically, but they can be functionally connected through the concept of the body's musculoskeletal and neuromuscular system.

  1. Musculoskeletal and Neuromuscular Connections: The body's musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems are interconnected, and imbalances or dysfunctions in one part of the body can potentially affect other areas. In this context, both the TMJ and the pelvic floor are influenced by factors like posture, muscle tension, and stress.
  2. Stress and Tension: Stress can lead to muscle tension and clenching in various parts of the body, including the jaw and the pelvic floor. People who experience chronic stress may unconsciously clench their jaw (a condition known as bruxism), which can lead to TMJ issues. Likewise, tension in the pelvic floor muscles can result from stress and anxiety.
  3. Central Nervous System: The central nervous system plays a role in regulating muscle tone throughout the body. An overactive or overstimulated nervous system can contribute to muscle tension in various areas, including the jaw and pelvic floor.
  4. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: We consider the whole-body approach when treating TMJ disorders or pelvic floor dysfunction. We may assess and address any underlying postural, muscular, or neuromuscular issues that could be contributing to both conditions.
